Porting Course

At Mondello Technical School, we will teach the correct way to port cylinder heads using conventional hand grinding techniques. Topics that will be covered include the proper way to form and control the radius and shapes of the intake and exhaust ports, how to shape valve guides, valve bowls and how to grind and polish the proper finish on the port runners and combustion chamber surfaces. We will go over, in depth, how to shape intake port runners and combustion chambers for the ultimate swirling and flow of air and fuel through your cylinder head intake system. The proper shape and design of the piston and ring combinations will be discussed in detail. The shape of the short side or "short turn" radius will be taught using new techniques and designs. The exhaust ports will be covered concerning shape, design, radius, short side and the proper way to apply the final high gloss finish. Students will learn how to port with aluminum and cast iron material. We will flow test all the areas we are working with to show you the maximum way to achieve flow and swirling. We will spend alot of time discussing and comparing camshaft profiles, lifts, lobe centers and lobe separations plus the ever so critical duration at .200" lift for maximum power and torque development of the final engine combination. Students will learn the correct way to port, shape and line up the geometric port angles for proper intake manifold to cylinder head fit, match porting and alignment. "Match Porting" assures a perfect cylinder head to intake manifold port alignment. We will also cover welding, epoxying and reshaping the plenum and runners of intake manifolds for maximum flow. The proper size carburetor (cfm), jets, circuitry, air cleaners and fuel systems will be covered in detail to assure the student will be able to obtain a good fuel curve for an engine combination. The choice of proper valves, including alloys, shapes, angles, undercuts, back cutting, stem sizes, valve finishes, stem finishes, hardness and weights will all be covered. The valve train, springs, retainers, valve locks, roller rocker systems, rocker arm stud girdles, rocker studs, poly locks and spring cups will also be covered, along with the proper selection of camshafts, lifters, roller tappets, timing chains, timing belts, gear drives, thrust bearings, cam retaining plates and thrust buttons.

We have and use the latest and best available valve equipment, both mechanical (computer programmable) and hand grinding equipment with stones for the smaller shops that cannot afford to own the "high tech" equipment. We have a cylinder head and intake manifold milling machine for surfacing, angle milling, milling intake and exhaust surfaces and block decking. A computerized Cam Profiler to check the exact timing events of any given camshaft to be used in conjunction with maximum flow heads and engine combination. Mondello's Technical School will feature the latest computerized 620 flow bench from Superflow Corporation. This bench has a computerized intake port swirling attachment to obtain maximum intake port and combustion chamber swirling effects for better fuel distribution and total combustion chamber burning efficiency in the engine. Our shop is complete with an engine lathe, milling machine, drill press and every conceivable micrometer & test gauge available and the latest valve refacing equipment. The latest valve guide equipment from K-Line will be featured.

Our porting room is completely suctioned for clean air always and has controlled heat and air with a porting station for each student. Engine clean room is a hospital type atmosphere full of precision instruments, Snap-On Tools, metal benches, engine stands, etc. The machine shop area is well lighted, very clean and full of the best equipment. Our complete shop is painted with a beautiful paint scheme, semi-gloss finish with high gloss epoxy floors. The upstairs classroom is carpeted and provides a professional setting. There is a very nice, relaxing break room full of snacks and refreshments. This is where a great lunch will be served daily.

Our school is designed for both smaller and larger shops that can not afford CNC cylinder head porting centers, so that they may get a share of the cylinder head market in their area for street, bracket, all out competition, circle track, road racing, etc.

This is not a school for a highly trained and experienced cylinder head expert, but some hand grinding and cylinder head porting experience is required. This class is a highly technical class and we will not have time to teach beginners without any experience. This is the only school in the country you can attend for one week and graduate with a PHD degree ("Porting Head" Doctor).

The class registration fee is $2,500.00 per course, per student and includes "hands-on" instruction by Joe Mondello himself along with a workbook students will take with them after completing the class. The class runs five days (Monday Thru Friday) , 9 hours per day. The Head Porting and Engine Blueprinting class schedules run back to back, and we offer a discount of $300.00 if you enroll in both courses.  Included in the price is 6 nights of lodging, 5 great lunches, snacks and refreshments. A registration deposit of $1,000.00 will be required. There will be a minimum of 6 students per class to a maximum of 12.

Advanced Head Porting classes are available and run 2-4 days.  The tuition for this class is $600.00 per day and is only available to our graduate students.  Upon completion of our classes, each student will receive a certificate of completion.
